Article by Ruth Evans for Vocalise (Sing for Pleasure Magazine)....

Sunday 18 February saw the first SfP Community Choir Showcase in Wales, hosted by Welsh National Opera at Venue Cymru (their North Wales opera house) in the beautiful seaside town of Llandudno.

The event was organised by Ruth Evans (SfP Tutor and WNO Youth & Community Producer) and Sioned Foulkes (WNO Project Manager and SfP member).

Five hundred singers from eleven choirs took part in the day, with each choir given the opportunity to perform a ten-minute set on the main stage. At the end of the day all singers learned the ‘Humming Chorus’ using the CânSing/WNO interactive resources (recently shortlisted for a Music Teacher Magazine Award for Excellence, sponsored by Classic FM) and then treated to a performance of Madam Butterfly arias by two opera singers from Welsh National Opera.

Manvinder Rattan and Imelda Shirley were the adjudicators, and the communal singing was led by SfP tutors Stuart Overington and Ruth Evans, and WNO vocal animateur Jenny Pearson. The day finished with the full auditorium singing the SfP classic Gin & Tonic round from our ‘Golden Rounds’ book, followed by the Welsh National Anthem Mae hen wlad nhadau (Land of My Fathers). #Gwlad!Gwlad
