Hen Ardd Hen Ardd is a wildlife gem in the heart of the Eryrys community. The site, which is designated a County Wildlife Site, is a small piece of common land found opposite the church graveyard. Denbighshire Countryside Service is managing Hen Ardd, alongside the local community and the Llanarmon yn Ial Community Council, for conservation and to provide a great place for local people to enjoy visiting throughout the year. In the last couple of years the site has seen improvements such as a new boardwalk to make the site more accessible, new fingerposts and signs and some willow coppicing. Hen Ardd is dominated by a peaty wetland. The wetland is special due to the base rich water which flows into the site and neutralises what would otherwise be acidic conditions. This allows many wetland plants to flourish, including the uncommon Marsh cinquefoil. The wetland is surrounded by neutral and calcareous grassland, providing a beautiful floral display throughout the spring and summer. The delicate flowers of the grassland also allow a wide range of butterflies to thrive on the site. In addition, Hen Ardd provides ideal habitat for a range of amphibians and reptiles. The uncommon Great Crested newt has been recorded here and recent reptile monitoring has confirmed grass snakes are using the site. Denbighshire Countryside Service organises various volunteer tasks at Hen Ardd for people to get involved in to help maintain the site. In winter, tasks tend to be practically based, such as willow coppicing and scrub removal whilst over the spring and summer months wildlife monitoring is carried out. If you are interested in being involved please keep an eye on the website for up and coming events or for more detailed information email ruth.calcraft@denbighshire.gov.uk or phone 01352 810614.
