Dr Chris’ Monthly Blog - July 2010
I seem to have done nothing but sing for the last month.
On July 3rd the Dewi Sant Community choir, brilliantly conducted by Ruth, set off 40 strong to sing in the Chester BIG SING. We had four singing slots of 15 minutes around Chester. Fortunately we had a quiet spot in the Cathedral Grounds to begin with, so we could rehearse our pieces and get vaguely in tune before going to the busy Cross, and the even busier town hall stage. We finally left after sight singing in the Cathedral. What a lovely day, enjoyed by all including families and friends.
Also on Sunday 10th I sang with the Glyndwr Choir in Wrexham, excerpts from Carmen with a dishy Spanish Tenor. The men, which has 2 female tenors (including myself), were given ‘Drink to me only’ as the lasses sang the lion’s share of Carmen. All unaccompanied and apparently we were in tune, my sight-reading is improving but I still can’t pitch!
The youth Club is winding up for the summer holidays. As well as the weekly meetings we have had archery on the playing field, well supervised by Phil Harrison and his scouting mates, not a single mishap. Then canoeing on the river Dee at Trevalyn, where 15 youths, 10 dogs, numerous adults had a BBQ at the Evans holiday house or as we call it ‘The Hut’. All had a great time and the weather held out as it started to bucket down just as we had finished. Thanks again to Phil for organising the canoes and to everyone who helped to cook, wash up etc. Again no one fell in.
Council work carries on, some of it interminable, but some interesting enough. There has been a good change in the working of customer services, which since the first of the month has to respond to a request in 3 days and make sure that the request is dealt with within 2 working weeks. Put all you requests for housing help, reporting of pot holes, verge overgrowth and general angst through visiting the One Stop Shops or Housing counter, or customer service by phone. Everything is now logged and recorded. Even I cannot get through to individual persons in Highways; this is to protect them from angry callers and also to let them get on with the work.
I had an interesting phone call from a man who left Llanarmon when he was 7, he is now in his 70’s and he was one of the boys in the old school photo on the webpage. He wants to get in touch with the family who put the old photo in. He is called Warwick Gregson and now lives in USA. He used to live in a row of cottages opposite the post office, which are no longer there. If anyone can help me I will send him the information.
Have a good summer hols.
